War Memorial Homes

The Suffolk Regiment Cottage Homes in Out Risbygate, Bury St Edmunds, opened in June 1906 by HRH Princess Christian. Both houses were to be occupied by wounded Old Soldiers of the Regiment. The houses carry many interesting plaques including one in memory of Captain R. de Manzer who was killed in action with 1/Suffolk in 1940.

After the Second World War the War Memorial Homes were opened at Minden Close, Eastgate Street, Bury St Edmunds. The money was raised by Regimental and public subscription and a loan from the Borough Council. The ground was a gift from the Earl of Bristol.

The two separate charities responsible for the two sets of homes were amalgamated in the late 1940s.

The Regimental Cottage Homes and the War Memorial Homes were all handed over to Haig Homes who are now responsible for their upkeep and care.
