Suffolk Regiment OCA
Stowmarket
The Stowmarket Branch of the Suffolk Regiment Old Comrades Association came into being in 1946, the meetings being held at The Pot of Flowers public house in Bury Street. After a few years, membership dropped off and as no interest in the club was being shown, it was discontinued.
However, on Wednesday 23rd september 1987, a meeting chaired by Colonel Peter Dean decided to reform with the support of the OCA. A President, Chairman, Secretary and a Committee were elected and the meetings were to be held at The Royal British Legion Club, Stowmarket on the last Wednesday of every month at 8pm. From this the Stowmarket Branch has flourished. Membership is now around the 70 mark, with monthly meetings being attended by between 30 and 40 members. Meeting format means that club business takes about 15 minutes followed by speakers on various subjects from Military History to any interesting subject as voted on by the Committee. The evening concludes with a small buffet and a draw; prizes being donated by members.
Annually we have a day outing to such places as The London Eye, boat trips on the Broads and local rivers, visits to the theatre. Our day outings always include a meal. This year the Forum at Norwich is booked. we also have a well attended Christmas Dinner.
Longer trips have been taken to Ypres, Edinburgh Tattoo, Arnhem, Weert and Normandy.
The Christmas Dinner and Day Outings are subsidised by holding a coffee morning in November. The subscription to belong to the Stowmarket Branch is an annual fee of £2.00.
Minden Day and the Royal Anglian Gathering at Duxford are looked forward to and are well attended by members with transport provided from Stowmarket by a local coach company or members own transport.
